4 Steps to a Perfect interior Paint Job

Looking to freshen up the rooms in your home? Want a new, updated, modern look?

Interior painting is one home improvement project that can quickly refresh your home's interior for relatively little time and money. That's the power of a coat of paint: Color changes everything.

Most of us can do an acceptable job of painting a room. But an experienced professional painter can add a very professional touch to your home. They know techniques and tricks that make them better painters and they have specialized equipment (brushes, sprayers, etc) that enable them to paint the perfect edge effortlessly... something that is very difficult for the non-pro to pull off.

I will share with you some secrets and provide you with more than enough to get better results and give your work more efficiency. Some of what you'll read may surprise you. Painters spend two to four days on an average-size room.

That's how long it takes to prep, prime and paint correctly.

You must check for lead paint. If you have a home built before 1978. hire a qualified lead expert to check it out before you begin any work. Some older homes still have lead paint in the original layers.

To begin, move everything out of the room. Bigger pieces of furniture can sometimes be left covered in the center of larger rooms, but if you are repairing drywall, the dust goes everywhere. Also, remove doors, light fixtures and hardware, and label everything with masking tape.

Prep for paint. Paint preparation is the foundation for the entire job - if mix correctly your paint will perform to its fullest potential. If done incorrectly, the painting will crack, peel, or chip easily. Make any necessary repairs before you establish your painting project. Dirty walls should be cleaned, especially near the stove and sink. But, be careful, greasy deposits and soap scum can interfere with paint's adhesion.

Choose a nice paint color. Keep in mind the apparent space of the room. Dark colors tend to make a room look smaller, while light colors open up the space. Test drive your color by investing in a quart-sized (or smaller) can of paint in the color you're thinking of using before you buy a bigger (and more expensive) can. Paint a small portion of your wall and watch the color in different lights throughout the day so you don't get stuck with a color that only looks how you want it to look in broad daylight. Stick with neutral colors if you're preparing to sell your home. Remember that buyers want to be able to imagine their things in your home.

The finish of your paint, or sheen, will have a major impact on your walls. Gloss, satin, egg shell - with these options comes many considerations. If you have many damages on your walls, consider a flat paint, but keep in mind flat paint is harder to clean. An eggshell finish has slight shine/gloss and is also so nice for walls, but holds up better with cleaning. The rule is the higher the sheen, the better it will stand up to washing and cleaning.
